Война за независимость в Северной Америке (1775—1783), тж. Американская революция. Революционно-освободительная война 13 колоний в Северной Америке против английского колониального господства, в ходе которой было созданонезависимое государство, получившее название Соединенные Штаты Америки. Война за независимость была буржуазной революцией которая привела к свержению колониального ига и образованию американского национального государства. Несмотря на ограниченность буржуазной революции в Северной Америке, она имела положительное значение для дальнейшего развития страны и, как указывал К. Маркс, «прозвучала набатным колоколом для европейской буржуазии».
The war between Great Britain and her American colonies, 1775-83, by which the, colonies won their independence. It started with skirmishes at Lexington and Concord (Apr. 1775). On Christmas night 1776, Washington attacked and captured sleeping Hessians at Trenton, N. J., the next year British general Burgoyne was forced to surrender at Saratoga (this battle is considered the turning point of the war), though it was followed by the bitter winter for Washington's army at Valley Forge near Philadelphia. In 1781, the British forces under Lord Cornwallis abandoned North Carolina and surrendered to General Washington at Yorktown, Va., this brought the war to an end. Syn.
